Petition to support Pope's visit to UK: Please sign

Link to sign petition at 'Catholic Church Convservation'. Link in my sidebar here. It's new. There were only 7 signatories when I signed a few minutes ago. We have just over 7 months to make a really big statement. You don't have to be Catholic or even Christian to sign it.

More later. In a rush to get to Papal Vespers mentioned earlier.

Will do. I have discovered today that there is a petition against the visit which has a large number of signatures already.

There are many comments on British newspaper websites today revealing the anti-Catholic hatred which obviously still exists here. I don't remember this before the visit of John Paul II but then we did not have the internet at that time.

Signed the petition.
Our Holy Father carries his cross with dignity , fortitude, and great joy.The cries of "crucify him" have been heard before.
God Bless our "Glory of the Olives".

Oh Sandy, I wrote these things in my spiritual notebook a year ago and I thought them again today.

God bless

Must correct my original posting.

The other petition is actually entitled 'Make the Pope Pay - Say NO to state funded visit to the UK.' I get the impression they don't want him to visit but having a petition saying that might have been problematic for them so cleverly they are plugging this aspect - the fact that the tax payer pays for state visits.

There have been 5,484 signatures to date.

Joe, Thanks. Know you'll spread the word.

Pelerin thanks for giving us this news. I hope people will read your comment. It's really important that they do. FACT IS, THE HOLY FATHER HAS SAVED THE BRITISH GOVT. AN AWFUL LOT OF MONEY BY REFUSING A STATE VISIT, WHICH WOULD HAVE INVOLVED HIS BEING HAULED DOWN THE MALL IN AN OPEN LANDAU AND THEN BEING SUBMITTED TO A HUGE BANQUET AT BUCK HOUSE WHICH WOULD PROBABLY UPSET HIS DIGESTION FOR WEEKS. NOT TO MENTION THE SECURITY COSTS, AND IN ANY CASE THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF THAT SECURITY PUTS THE WHOLE THING OUT OF THE QUESTION. AND NOT TO MENTION EITHER, THAT BECAUSE HE HAS MORE SPIRITUAL THINGS TO DO, THE QUEEN WILL NOT HAVE TO COME DOWN FROM BALMORAL TO HOST SUCH AN UNNECESSARY AND INAPPROPRIATE BROU-HA-HA.

The rule in these cases seems to be that the receiving local Church pays, and if it can't afford it the Holy See helps out.. However, since this invitation was issued by the Brisish Government and not by the Bishops Conference, regardless of what Cardinal Murphy O'connor has said about previous invitations being extended and refused,it would seem only right that the British Government should bear some of the cost.

It is to be an Apostolic journey, not as the Times repeatedly says, a State visit. Unless it's changed again. I doubt it.
