Oh How I love these 'old' hymns - thank you so much for putting them here Jane. I was received into the Church on the Feast of the Sacred Heart 1965 so this hymn has a special significance for me. I had no idea they were on the Internet.

Yes, most of them seem to be on You Tube. I love them too. Of course we didn't have hymns at Mass in my early days, apart from Christmas and 'Adeste Fideles'. They were mainly for Benediction and Processions. At least that's how I remember things 'up north'!

Yes I'm sure you are right Jane. I remember the hymns from weekly Benediction at first prior to 1965. I do remember when what was referred to as the 'Green Hymn book'(or occasionally the 'Protestant Hymn Book!) was introduced into the parish although not whether this was prior to 1965 or after.

I think the 'green hymn book' was probably the Anglo-Catholic Hymnal which I have somewhere. I'll check out the details. I tell you it's more catholic than the Westminster 'Celebraation Hymnal' which includes things like 'Mary was a Washer-woman' Lord give us strength!

Oh, what memories. I love this hymn, so rarely heard nowadays, especially the tricky bit where a third of the congregation would go up, instead of down. It was what I'd call a belter, in the same mold as God Bless Our Pope. When this was sung at Benediction you could never say Catholics don't sing. That came later. I wonder why?
But, and I could hardly believe it, this very hymn was sung on Sunday at a parish whose priest is "one of the newer fellas". What a delightful surprise. Sadly, I could only remember the first verse - it's that long ago - and had to crib the rest before it came back to me.

Thanks Genty:

We Catholics do love our 'ups' and 'downs', bumpy though they may be!

God bless

Thank you for this great hymn, Jane! Sadly I came into the Church - 1968 - just as folk hymnals and the Celebration Hymnal ! were taking over. It is said in my parish that people don't want the old Catholic hymns, but you bet they do!!!! Given the chance they'd love to have Full In The Panting Heart of Rome and Faith of our Fathers again. Why MUST we pander to protestantism? We got there first, asI'm sure the early Church fathers would willingly attest!
